I have talked about this before but from what I have read from a few of you…you may not be listening.  The message I have for you is, “UPDATE EVERYTHING!”. I know on the web all caps indicate shouting, but I am shouting to get your attention! What are the dangers of not updating software applications or my operating system on my computer?

Not updating software applications on your computer can put your system and data at risk in several ways. Security vulnerabilities for one thing are that outdated software has often been known to lead to security vulnerabilities. These weaknesses can be exploited by attackers to gain access to your system and sensitive data. How would you like some nefarious person in Cathaysia to have access to your debit card, charge card, or entire bank account? Much less your email account? Think about it, if they could access your email, they could change most of your passwords and get everything about you.

Moreover, compatibility could be an issue as newer software versions are designed to work with the latest operating systems and hardware. Failure to update can cause compatibility problems. Software updates often include performance enhancements, bug fixes, and other improvements that can help your system run more smoothly. Also, software updates often include new features and functionalities, so not updating can limit your ability to take advantage of these.

Outdated software may lack the latest security features and patches, making it easier for malware to infect your system. Updates can also fix bugs that can cause data loss or corruption, so not updating can put your data at risk. Some software applications are required to be updated to meet industry standards or regulations, and failure to comply can result in penalties or legal consequences for corporations and other businesses.

Regularly updating software applications is an important aspect of maintaining the security and stability of your computer system. It can help protect you from security threats, keep your software running smoothly, and ensure that you have access to the latest features and improvements.

To update individual apps, the most time-consuming way. Go to each software application’s Help or Settings menu and check for any available updates. Some applications may also have an automatic update feature that you can enable.

An easier way is to use an update manager. I always recommend Patch My PC Home Updater (ghtech.site/patch). I have written about it and mentioned it many times in the past. If you are not using it, you are not taking advantage of a free solution. This one is my #1 candidate for how it performs. My friend, Jeff Ishee, (onthefarmradio.com), is a believer too…ask him.

Many operating systems, such as Windows and macOS, have built-in update managers that can help you keep your operating systems up to date as well. With Windows, click on your Windows menu button and type, “updates” and then click on “Check for updates” and you are on your way. They do install automatically but I have found that is not always true. I am not an Apple user but to run an update to the OS, try this: from the Apple menu, in the corner of your screen, choose “System Settings.” Now, click “General” in the sidebar of the window that opens, then click “Software Update” on the right.

I run a system update for my computers weekly, but I am hyper.

Remember to always download updates from the official website of the software vendor or the app store. Downloading updates from untrusted sources can expose your computer to problems. Also, it’s always a good idea to back up your important data before updating your software, in case anything goes wrong during the update process.

Please note that these instructions are NOT exhaustive and there are many other third-party software updaters available. When choosing a third-party updater, it is important to research and select one that meets your specific needs and is reputable and reliable. But again, I trust Patch My PC.
