Over the years not once have I mentioned MMS and only once SMS (and then only as an aside). If you check with my wife and many friends it is because I just do not like this technology much at all. I find it a waste of time. Too lengthy. And then there is that crazy autocorrect! I am talking about texting with your phone.
I much prefer to dial your phone number and talk for a second. You do not even need to dial any longer, just hit the speed dial button for the person.
I do use texting for people who talk too long. However, I have found that people who like to talk for 30 minutes, or an hour or more also tend to type for a long, long time. So I try to avoid those folks all together.
First, a couple of definitions. SMS stands for "Short Message Service" more commonly called, "Texting." With SMS you can send messages of up to 160 characters from your phone to another phone. If you type more than that, the current technology will split the message and send additional messages of up to 160 characters each.
MMS is "Multimedia Messaging Service" which evolved from SMS and expanded the capabilities. With MMS you can send pictures, video and/or audio content to another compatible device. Most cell phones today can do both.
Here is my app recommendation. I use Google’s Chrome browser almost exclusively. There is an extension for this browser called, "Mighty Text" (mightytext.net) which allows you to send and receive SMS and MMS using your computer. The only prerequisites are that you use Chrome and have an Android phone.
Mighty Text syncs with your phone and actually uses your phone to send and receive the messages, pictures, etc. It pulls in your contacts list from your Gmail account so that you can send messages to people from your list using only their name.
So while I am at my computer working away or surfing the net, etc. a text message comes in on my phone. It immediately notifies me in my browser that I have a message. From my computer I can click it and read the message and respond to it all without using my phone. I can "chat" back and forth; send a picture to someone, a YouTube link or whatever else I would like.
But here is the biggest and most exciting news, for me at any rate. No auto-correct! Yes, my words may be misspelled but not like in my most recent text today to my wife from my phone. It was supposed to say, "It is done," but when she got it, it said, "It is five." She must have thought I was in another time zone.
Along with these interesting and useful features, it also shows the battery charge of your phone in your browser. So if you see your battery going low you can charge it and never have to worry about checking the power on your phone.
When you try it let me know if you like it or not.
