It is hard to believe but today we begin the 18th year of the "Double Click" column.  I want to thank all of you for reading the almost 900 articles.  Thanks for the emails I continue to receive.  Not only does it let me know the articles are actually being read but I really enjoy talking to you (and getting new article ideas from you).  So please keep them coming!

Once again, this January I will be reviewing the sites I wrote about during the previous year.  If the site addresses are too long for print, I have shortened them using the "bit.ly" app.  Copy them, then paste them in your browser’s address bar to visit the sites (caps count if you type them in).  If you visit DoubleClicks.info you can click the links and go directly to the sites.

So, here they are in their order of appearance with short descriptions of each.

  • Outlook.com, Hotmail.com or Live.com, email services all under Outlook.com (Microsoft). They combined them into one account; however, all email addresses in any of them function fully.
  • Microsoft Account vs. Local Account in Windows 10, bit.ly/localvslinked, see what the difference is and if you should choose one over the other.
  • Automatic.com, a hardware device that plugs into the computer port of your car that your mechanic plugs their computer into to find out if your car is having any issues, you can do it too.
  • Chrome Browser, google.com/chrome, currently the most used browser in the world.
  • Speedtest, speedtest.net, a site and also a downloadable application you can use to find out how fast your internet actually is, i.e., not always what is promised by your internet provider.
  • CamFind, camfindapp.com, billed as, "The world’s most accurate mobile visual search engine." It works on your phone. Take a picture and it identifies the item and gives you links to it or similar items. Not perfect but fun.
  • DoubleClicks.info, yes, this site but read, "A Paper that Changed Our World" for an interesting article on passwords today.
  • Facebook.com and PayPal.com, really nothing needed here, you know them.
  • Mighty Text, mightytext.net, allows you to send text messages from your phone from your computer.  This works with Android devices and PCs only.
  • Print Friendly, printfriendly.com, a Chrome browser add-on that makes it easy to print a webpage the way you want.
  • Udemy.com, an online training site with good prices for many types of classes.
  • Massive Open Online Courses, mooc-list.com, provides even more training through some universities and other educational organizations, some for free.
  • FileHippo App Manager, bit.ly/HippoAppManager and Patch My PC, patchmypc.com are both apps that allow you to update your software. It works similarly to Windows Update for your Operating system but instead for many individual applications.

See you next week for the last half of 2018 in review.
