This week we started with a couple of interesting thoughts. Why is the older generation targeted for scams and “Who guards the guardians?” Should the internet be censored?

What do you think about what we thought.  Listen to the Podcast here.

Then, due to reader and listener requests, we talked about some of my favorite applications. Keep talking to and emailing me, I listen and try to present what you want.

Ron’s Favorite Windows Apps

Browser

This is a very easy choice for me, Google Chrome (google.com/chrome) is the only one I use. This could change overtime as it has in the past. I used FireFox (firefox.com) for years before but they were overtaken by Chrome.

Productivity Suites

This is probably the number one application that people use and need other than their browser. The one we all hear about ALL of the time is Microsoft Office which is an absolutely fantastic office suite. That being said for the large majority of people it is totally unnecessary. There are hundreds if not thousands of features that you will never need. I am a fairly advanced user and I have no need for most of them.

I have several recommendations for great Suites. The first two are about equal depending on you love of cloud storage.

  1. Google Office (drive.google.com) free, online only, nothing to install, you must have a Gmail account, uses Google Drive for cloud storage.
  2. Libre Office (libreoffice.com) free, you must download it and install on your computer, default storage is in My Documents.
  3. Microsoft Office Online, free at office.com, best practice would be to have an Outlook email address but can work with others.
  4. Microsoft Office, prices vary from depending on what you get, range from 6.99/month ($69.99/year) to $149/one time for download of current version. Check the details at products.office.com/en-us/home

I hope you enjoyed the show and come back next month for a continuation of the apps that I really like to use.

As always they are mostly free! See you here again or on WSVA, September 17th at 9:00 AM EST.
