Welcome back to the WSVA Notes and Podcast from the show. I hope you enjoyed it on this new day. Usually, it is the third Monday each month.

Due to scheduling issues it was today, the second Wednesday. Next month we should be back at the regular date and time. Which if I calculated correctly is August 20th at 9:00 am.

Do not forget to check the last item below. It is very important for me and could be for you and yours.

So, let me begin with today’s info.

Tech News
Apple’s App Store Turns 10

July 10, 2018 the App Store appeared in the cloud with 500 apps. (Today about 2 million and 3.8 million in Google Play.)

Without Apple’s App Store, your iPhone may well have just stayed a phone.

The App Store has been around so long, it’s easy to forget that it wasn’t always a core part of the iPhone concept. The store came a year after the introduction of original iPhone, arriving with the iPhone 3G. It debuted with 500 apps from developers like MLB and The New York Times, and iPhone and iPod Touch owners in 62 countries had access to the store when it opened 10 years ago today (07/10/2008).

Microsoft Surface Go: 10-inch Windows tablet coming Aug. 2 for $399

It’s smaller, more portable and less expensive. But it’s also less powerful and still drives up the real-world cost by excluding must-have extra accessories. In other words, the new Surface Go from Microsoft is the answer to about half your PC tablet dreams. But starting at a very reasonable $399, that may be more than good enough. (Australian price is AU$599 and the US price converts to roughly £299.)

The Surface Go has a smaller 10-inch display than the 12.3-inch Pro, making it feel a bit like an iPad ($329 at Walmart). But it also swaps the Core i-series Intel CPUs for lower-end Pentium processors. That means this new Surface may feel more like a budget laptop and less like a full PC. It’s a step down in processing power, but the potential silver lining is that for most of what people do on their PCs today — surfing the web, media playback, using online tools and services — there may not be much of an experiential difference.

Facebook Addiction

Many reasons you could have a FB addition.

If you’re wondering at what point fixation with social networking explodes into full-blown Facebook addiction, here are seven warning signs that you (or someone you know) may be addicted to Facebook.

Spending excessive time on Facebook is a clear red flag. How much time is excessive? If you spend more than two hours in a row or three hours daily with your nose buried in the Facebook website, you are probably addicted.

Udemy.com is an interesting online training site that is reasonably priced…in most areas.

The above is a link to the web site. But the app is available on all phone stores, Android, iPhones, Windows and all computers. I use Android of course.

"Udemy is a global marketplace for learning and teaching online where students are mastering new skills and achieving their goals by learning from an extensive library of over 55,000 courses taught by expert instructors."

Training for all sorts of subjects. Usually at prices of $0 (usually for a short intro)- $25+ per course. Courses can run from 20 minutes to many hours.

Flightradar24 Flight Tracker this is the Android link but it is available for all phones and tablets at this time.

I have talked about this before but Frank and I got sidetracked talking about it this morning.

The free flight tracker that the Wall Street Journal calls “The Facebook of Aviation”.  Turn your phone or tablet into a live plane tracker and see flights around the world move in real-time on a detailed map. Or point your device at a plane to find out where it’s going and what kind of aircraft it is. Download for free today and discover why millions track flights and check their flight status with Flightradar24.

This is the last item.

Since the last century I have been training people how to use software and computers. I was asked by many individuals if I would teach them how to do ____________ (fill in the blank). I have always happily shown them. I was recently asked to have some courses for Seniors as they seem to be newer to the web than some other age groups. So starting next week I will be having some friendly, easy to understand classes for seniors (really of any age).

The first one is called Online Safety for Seniors and can be found at my new site, Double Clicks Live. If you are in the local area and any age, please consider signing up and I KNOW you will learn somethings to help you.

More training sessions will follow.

That is all for today. I hope you will come back and join us in August for the next exciting adventure!

Ron
